Journalist. Newsroom leader.

Matt Kiewiet is the Managing Editor for the Butte and Helena properties of Lee Enterprises. Based in Butte, Montana, he leads the newsrooms of the (Helena) Independent Record and The Montana Standard. He is passionate about empowering local journalists and ensuring their reporting reaches and resonates throughout the communities they serve.

Matt is proud to have contributed to and overseen enterprise news projects, forcing state officials to take notice and take action. He helped with The Standard’s continuing coverage of historic trout decline on the Big Hole River, a well-known Blue Ribbon trout stream in southwest Montana. More recently, he supervised the Independent Record’s ongoing coverage of Helena’s growing homeless population.

Previously, Matt was the Sports Editor for The Standard. During that time, he and his team reported on the saga of the Mining City Tommyknockers, a summer collegiate baseball team that halted their season with six games to play after the players’ and county’s relationship with team management became too toxic to continue.

Matt strives to create a workplace culture where everyone can always come back to one common goal – quality local journalism. Office conflicts don’t always end with neat and tidy solutions, but the common goal has a way of getting things back on track and keeping the newsroom humming.

He is a graduate of Northern Arizona University, where he earned is B.S. in Journalism with a minor in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
